Sorry, Gayla. I live in Alaska, and I really had a hard time finding a hedgehog up here. I wouldn't know where to begin to look in Oklahoma. Good news, though: According to Hedgehog Central, at least it's LEGAL to own a hedgehog in your home state! Good luck in your search!

Thank you for sharing Yozhik with us. The youtube memorial was poignant and touching. It showed the love you both have for him and the pain of losing him.

With our sympathy,

Hi, Marcela.

Personally, I think a hedgehog makes a great pet. They can be trained to some extent, they're fairly clean, and it doesn't cost much to feed and care for them. You'll have to decide for yourself if the initial price is worth it, but once you get the hedgehog and the cage, feeding expenses are minimal.

We mostly fed our hedgehog dry food. Here in the US, you can order hedgehog food from pet stores. If you can't find pet food that's specifically for hedgehogs, you can substitute cat food. Some books we read specifically recommended kitten food. Also, we discovered that our hedgehog really loved canned (wet) cat food.

You can also feed a hedgehog plenty of treats. Find out what he likes! Ours loved mealworms, pine nuts, wet cat food, and some fruits. What worked best for us was to keep his food dish full of dry cat food, but we only gave him the good food by hand. Over time, he lost his fear of us because he associated humans with treats.

I don't know what other facts you might be looking for. If you want to ask me any specific questions, I'd be happy to try to answer them.

-A.

P.S. Where do you live in Costa Rica? I proposed to my wife there!

Hi, I found this page because I’m thinking on purchasing a African Pygmy Hedgehog, yesterday I found one at a vet near my house (like 20 min away by car). It was the cutest thing I have seen, the cost in my countries currency is very similar (in US$ it cost $117).
I live in Costa Rica so it’s really easy to find "strange" little animals everywhere, difficult to find some that is selling them legally =o(.
The point is that I was looking for care info, my boyfriend told me that a salesman will say anything to sell, so some facts could not be totally true, due to the fact that you have one for a long time, can you help me out if you read this? thks!

[...] Sigh. How does one manage to write coherently about death? I want to write about our hedgehog, Yozhik, who died over two months ago. I want to commemorate him – and Oksana’s and my relationship with him – with eloquent language, but even two months after his death, painful emotions accompany the search for words.
Hi Arlo. :) Little Hedgie is adorable. At the state fair here I saw a display on a disease some hedgehogs can get called "Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome" (or "WHS"). For no apparent reason, they can suddenly lose the ability to stand, walk, etc, and are very unsteady. Hence the name, I guess. Anyways, I'm not so sure how common this is but just thought I would let you know about it.
PS - we moved to Portland. :)

I've seen Yozhik in all three modes. I just hope you don't think caring for kids involves three modes as well. Before you decide to go for the "real thing" maybe you should get a dog puppy, it will have about 50 different modes, you muliply that by about a thousand and here we go. You will need about three modes yourself: blocking out noises, I will sleep in my next life, and speed eating.
