@Mema & Granddad,

Hertford does not equal country, noted. Or rather, would it be okay to say your house is in Hertford, but Hertford is in the country? It sure seems like country living to me, but maybe that just because I'm coming from a bigger town.

@Marjorie,

With family in town and home cooking, we didn't eat out too often while we were in Hertford. One night we went to a place in the Food Lion strip mall. Tommy's? Food was okay, but nothing to write home about. Also, we ordered some pick-up from Captain Bob's -- always do! -- but that's just because I'm a sucker for NC-Style BBQ!

@Granddad Midgett,

Glad you enjoyed reading about our trip! We went by your old house on a pass through Elizabeth City. Oksana commented that the neighborhood looked better than last time, the house itself looked abandoned! Also, all the trees and vegetation around it was GONE -- even the hedge along the front yard. Very different looking.

Since getting Skype set up for the Griffins, I've been keeping it running on my laptop pretty much all day. Feel free to give me a call any time. I may not answer every time, but we'll connect one of these days.

@dad

That photo of Oksana was taken down in Hatteras. There was a short little goose poop-laden lawn behind our hotel that went right up against one of the water channels that meander through town. Nice place to bring a book.

Also, thanks for the article about Atlas Obscura. That's exactly the kind of stuff we're looking for!

We really enjoyed reading of your visit ( as usual). I've been trying to get my family interested in the Skype programs for years. So far no luck. We really look forward to next years posts.

thanks for posting pictures of Mema and Grandad! They are such an inspiration, you can feel their energetic souls through the photographs, just as when I saw them last time - at your wedding (ah, so long ago...)

Hi, Enjoyed reading your vacation notes and wonderful photos. My husband and I have a place at the Albemarle Plantation in Hertford and wish we could spend more time there. We live in CT and our kids and grandchildren like to vacation there as well. I was wondering where in Hertford did you have lunch. We used to go to the Hertford Cafe before it closed.

Very factual account of the NC visit except we thought we lived in Hertford,not in the "country".Front view from our house shows us one-half block from the center of down town.Back yard with river and cypress swamp does look a bit wild.We both enjoyed your latest Blog but not nearly as much as we enjoyed being with you and Oksana.And that is a FACT !!!! Mema & Granddad
